Photometric Properties of Low-redshift Galaxy Clusters
نویسنده
چکیده
A comprehensive multicolor survey was undertaken to investigate global optical properties of Abell clusters of galaxies. This survey was christened the LowRedshift Cluster Optical Survey (LOCOS). LOCOS was devised to search for patterns of galaxy evolution induced by the environment. The generated data base contains accurate deep CCD photometric measurements (Kron-Cousins R, B and I) for a sample of 46 low-redshift (0.04 ≤ z ≤ 0.18) Abell clusters. This is one of the few large surveys that included the contribution due to dwarf galaxies (about 5.5 mag deeper than the R characteristic magnitude (M∗R); Ho = 50 h50kms −1 Mpc, qo = 0). Due to space restrictions only the main results concerning the variations at the bright-end of the luminosity function (LF) are presented here. Other results are presented elsewhere (López-Cruz & Yee 2000a,b). We have detected clear variations at both the bright end and the faint end of the LF. The nature of the variations at the bright end revealed that poor cD clusters have dimmer M∗R. We can explain these variations as a result of dynamical friction. On the other hand, non-cD clusters seem to have unaffected LFs. A third class termed as binary clusters seems to be a transition class that might have resulted from cluster-cluster mergers.

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...

We present the first results of our application of photometric redshifts to the study of galaxy populations in high-redshift clusters. For this survey , we are examining a sample of galaxy clusters at z > 0.6 which have already been well-studied in the optical and infrared wavelengths (Oke, Postman & Lubin 1998). Our main goal is to use photometric redshifts to delineate accurately between fiel...
متن کاملA new (2+1)D cluster finding algorithm based on photometric redshifts: large scale structure in the Chandra Deep Field South
Aims. We study galaxy clustering and explore the dependence of galaxy properties on the the environment up to a redshift z ∼1, on the basis of a deep multi-band survey in the Chandra Deep Field South. Methods. We have developed a new method which combines galaxy angular positions and photometric redshifts to estimate the local galaxy number-density. This allows both the detection of overdensiti...
متن کاملExtrinsic Sources of Scatter in the Richness–mass Relation of Galaxy Clusters
Maximizing the utility of upcoming photometric cluster surveys requires a thorough understanding of the richness–mass relation of galaxy clusters. We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the impact of various sources of observational scatter on this relation. Cluster ellipticity, photometric errors, photometric redshift errors, and cluster-to-cluster variations in the properties of red-sequence...
متن کاملLuminous Compact Blue Galaxies in Intermediate Redshift Galaxy Clusters: A Significant But Extreme Butcher-Oemler Population
We identify a population of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) in two galaxy clusters: MS0451.6-0305 (z = 0.54) and Cl1604+4304 (z = 0.9). LCBGs are identified via photometric characteristics and photometric redshifts derived from broad and narrow band images taken with the WIYN telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. We analyze their surface densities and clustering properties to find th...
